MODERATE rip current risk and cold water temperatures that will lead to hypothermia at the beaches south of Oregon Inlet including Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Only experienced surf swimmers who know how to escape a rip current should enter the water wearing thermal protection. Never swim alone and always take flotation!
LOW rip current risk and cold water temperatures that will lead to hypothermia at the beaches of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head. While the risk for rip currents is low, life-threatening rip currents and the potential for hypothermia are still present. Remember LOW risk does not mean NO risk!
Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which is around 1010 am today.
